Having made its presence felt in India, UM Motorcycles is planning to go global with its new range of motorcycles. The company is planning to unveil a slew of new and existing models at the Intermot Show in Cologne, Germany, which is one of the biggest international motorcycle shows.
Some of the motorcycles which are going to be shown later this week will end up being sold on the Indian soil. While we have already seen the new range of Renegade models in the flesh, the Intermot Show will host the debut of the Xtreet and DSR series. While the former is a streetfighter, we are more interested in the DSR range of dual sport motorcycles. With the entry-level adventure segment seeing a lot of activity of late, the DSR should be a very interesting addition to the company’s Indian portfolio.
The UM DSR is available with three engine options with displacement ranging from 125cc to 223cc. With long travel suspension, upswept exhaust and other enduro-spec styling cues, the DSR looks like a dirt bike for the road. Such bikes are hugely practical for Indian road conditions while being perfect to satisfy the needs of adventure enthusiasts. In case it is launched here, it will rub shoulders with the Royal Enfield Himalayan and the upcoming adventure motorcycles from KTM and BMW.
UM Motorcycles will also unveil the Renegade range at the Intermot 2016, which includes the Sport S, Commando and the Classic. Though all three models are underpinned by identical cradle chassis with a 25 horsepower 280cc mill, these models get different styling and cater to different sets of audience.
For the Indian market, UM has entered into a partnership with Lohia Auto to manufacture and sell its motorcycles. With over 75 per cent localisation, UM has competitively priced its products with the aim of getting an edge over its rivals. The company is targeting to widen its footprint of 35 countries by the end of this quarter, including 10 AESAN and 10 European countries. The list of European countries will soon include Spain, Portugal, UK, Germany, France and Italy, which makes Intermot 2016 the perfect platform for the company.
