UM Motorcycles has had a few delays to the launch of its Renegade Commando, the first model in its lineup, but it finally has committed a date to its deliveries - somewhat. In a round table discussion yesterday, Rajeev Mishra, director, UM Limited, said that the first truck of UM motorcycles has rolled out of its facility. The current range is that of the Renegade cruiser only, a 280cc motorcycle that is intended to compete with the Royal Enfield Thunderbird.
UM Motorcycles brought their plans for launch forward and expanded them to include the entire country based on the feedback for the product during the Auto Expo. It now has 50 dealers across the country, and all the capital cities are in the list of dealers. The Renegade has garnered around 4,000 bookings, and the company is targeting sales of 25,000-30,000 units in one year. As of now the target is 1000 units a month, which will utilise the current manufacturing capacity of 15,000 units annually, but if demand grows, the company can increase production comfortably to 30,000 units. The company believes that the bracket into which the Renegade slots doesn't have much choice, and the sole competitor doesn't have the firepower (on paper at least) to go up against the Renegade.
With deliveries scheduled to begin around Diwali, expect some fireworks from UM - and we'll be sure to have our review up as soon as we get our mitts on the Renegade. Watch this space.
