Earlier this year, US-based two-wheeler manufacturer, United Motorcycles, impressed us with their range of Renegade cruiser motorcycles at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo. The company recently announced a joint venture with Lohia Auto to manufacture and market its motorcycles in the Indian market, though it has refused to divulge details about its first product launch. Now, it has been officially confirmed by a that the company will commence its operations in India by the second half of next year.
Talking to a popular automotive website, Mr Rajeev Mishra, MD of UM India Two Wheelers Pvt. Ltd said that they will initially launch two motorcycles - one in 250cc and one in 300cc segment. UM Motorcycles will start accepting bookings of its motorcycles in the first week of June, while deliveries are expected to commence by the end of July. These two motorcycles will be followed by a 400cc model.
Speaking to Motoroids about the company’s plans for India, Mr Mishra said, “The process has started to appoint the dealers. We are expecting the products to be available in showrooms by the end of July. In one year we are planning to launch about four-five models.”
UM plans to introduce a new model once in every three to four months. Initially the company will start production of the motorcycles at Lohia Auto’s plant in Kashipur, though eventually they will invest over Rs 120 crore to modernise the facility according to the market demand.
