- Airoh unveils airbag-integrated helmet
- Deploys on impact via gas generator
- Could debut sometime in 2023
Italian helmet manufacturer has unveiled the world’s first airbag-integrated helmet that is expected to be available in global markets by 2023.
The prototype model with the explosive safety technology has been made in collaboration with Autoliv, a Swedish manufacturer known for its 70-year experience in airbag vests and motorcycle inflatable solutions.
The integrated airbag functions the same way as the tech in a car’s dashboard. Upon impact, the airbag is electronically deployed from the crown of the helmet and smaller sections on the outer shell to offer greater absorption than a conventional helmet. Airoh says that the probability of a skull fracture is reduced by almost half. However, no speed or impact details have been provided to back that claim.
With that said, the testing for the airbag helmet tech has been on since 2020 with Airoh aiming to offer the external features one can expect from a conventional helmet. It has also faced the challenge of complying with the latest ECE22.06 safety standards before and after deployment.
While there is no word about its official launch timeline, we can expect it to make its debut early next year. It is yet to be known whether or not it will make its way to India. Nevertheless, this would be an interesting piece of safety technology to add to your riding gear.
