It is a day of rejoicing for India Yamaha Motor, the Indian arm of Japanese bike maker, Yamaha Motor Company, as the manufacturer has achieved the milestone of producing 10 million units in India. The Japanese bike maker had started its operations in India in 1985. Today, the company has three manufacturing facilities in India that are located in Surajpur, Faridabad and Chennai that, are conjointly responsible for production milestone.
The 10 millionth bike to roll out of Yamaha production facility was the recently introduced FZS-FI Version 3.0 at the Chennai plant. Along with this monumental achievement, the company also breached yet another milestone wherein it accomplished the production of five million units in the last seven years from 2012 to 2019. Notably, during this period, 44 per cent of the overall production has been contributed by the Fascino.
Coming back to the 10 millionth milestone achievement, in terms of statistics, 80 per cent of the units have been recorded from Surajpur and Faridabad plants while the remaining 20 per cent of units were contributed by the Chennai plant. Out of the 10 million units, 77.88 lakh units were contributed by motorcycles while the remaining 22.12 lakh units were fulfilled by scooters.
In its journey of 34 years in India, the company witnessed several milestones. From the Surajpur plant, the company bagged the one million production landmark in 1999 followed by the five millionth production milestone in 2012. Two years later, the company reached its one million production landmark for scooters with the Ray model that was introduced in 2012.
With the addition of the Chennai plant in 2015, Yamaha India has been able to bump up its production capacity from 4.5 lakh units in the same year to 9 lakh units in 2019. In the last five years, the cumulative production target achieved by all three plants has increased from 7.40 lakh units in 2014 to 10.2 lakh units in 2018. The above-mentioned statistics are inclusive of exports numbers.
