Yamaha MT-09 based R9 in the works?

- Yamaha R9 likely to be unveiled next year

- Would be based on MT-09 streetfighter

- Will sit below the R1

Yamaha is likely to add another motorcycle to its ‘R’ line-up sometime in 2023 with the R9. While there is no official confirmation yet, reports claim that the Yamaha R9 is set for a late-2023 debut.

The demand for a bridge between the parallel-twin R7 and the full-fat inline-four R1 has been high. And the R9, with the inline-three cylinder 888cc engine from the MT-09 would fill the gap perfectly. Adding to the evidence that the R9 will soon exist is the fact that every model in Yamaha’s MT range except the MT-09 has a fully-faired counterpart.

That said, we can expect Yamaha to not only plonk in the same engine as the MT-09 but also the same string of tech and features. While the design is unlikely to stray far from the R1 or R7, the R9 would surely receive slight cosmetic differences. According to the reports, it could come dressed up in a red and white livery that harks back to the original R1.

Now, Yamaha is likely to unveil the R9 as a 2024 model. While the brand has shared its intent to bring its big-bike line-up to India next year, it is yet to be seen if the R9 will make its way to the country.
