- Both the e-scooters were showcased at a dealer-exclusive event
- The Neo’s has already been launched overseas
- Yamaha plans to bring its EVs to India in 2023
Yamaha India has revealed its early EV plans in a dealer-exclusive event as it showcased the Neo’s and the E01 electric scooters. While rumor has it that these could be the first of many incoming Yamaha EVs, we think otherwise.
The Neo’s has already been launched in Europe and demands an asking price of EUR 3,005 (approximately Rs 2.52 lakh). You get a 2.03kW motor paired with two removable lithium-ion batteries that can collectively offer about 70km of range. However, the top speed is limited to 40kmph and the charging time is around eight hours.
It gets LED lights and the overall design is quirky. Theoretically, the Neo’s should be on par with 50cc petrol-powered two-wheelers and electric scooters like the Hero Electric Optima and Ampere Magnus. But the asking price is a bit too high given that India is a price-sensitive market.
As for the E01, it’s available in Japan but only on lease to the ones whose applications are approved. Basically, you can’t have full ownership of it. That aside, the Yamaha E01 dons a proper electric maxi-scooter attire. You can head here to read more about it.
Yamaha plans to bring its first EV to India in 2023 but we think it won’t be either of the two models that have been showcased. Moreover, Yamaha seems to have displayed the scooters for the sake of relevancy in the current E mobility talk. With that being said, the Japanese bikemaker could bring an India-specific model, which could be a curveball.
