The stringent Euro IV emission norms have found their latest victims in the form of the Yamaha XJR1300 and the XT660Z Tenere. Yamaha has decided to discontinue these two models as they do not comply with the soon to be enforced Euro IV emission norms.
The Yamaha XJR1200 was the original Japanese cafe racer of the early 1990s which was made to compete with the high powered naked bikes like the Honda CB1000. The current generation XJR1300 and its different iterations are powered by a 1300cc inline-four engine which churns out a healthy 98bhp and 108.5Nm of torque. However, due to their old architecture, it would be quite complicated and impractical to make them Euro IV compliant.
The Yamaha XT660Z Tenere is a versatile and rugged long touring motorcycle. Suffering from the same dilemma as the XJR1300, this motorcycle will also be discontinued by the end of this year. However the replacement for the XT660Z Tenere seems to be on the horizon. Previous spy shots of an MT-07-based adventure touring motorcycle indicate that Yamaha has been working on the solution for quite some time now. Expected to be christened XT700Z Tenere, this motorcycle is expected to break cover at the 2016 EICMA Show, later this year.
