Yamaha to unveil YFZ-R250 at EICMA

Yamaha will unveil the YFZ-R250 at EICMA show in Italy next week. Codenamed ‘Project 1w’, most of the design cues of the bike have been taken from its larger sibling the R6. Reports suggest that the bike has been aimed specifically at the Asian markets where buyers have a preference for lower capacity sports bikes below 1000cc.

In India, this bike will be the Yamaha’s entry card into the highly competitive 200-250cc range which is populated by two-wheelers like the Kawasaki Ninja 250R, KTM Duke 200, Honda CBR 250RR, Bajaj Pulsar 200Ns and the slightly old but still popular Hero Motorcorp Karizma.

While no details of the mill have been released as yet, we expect that it will be a twin-cylinder engine producing around 33-35bhp and around 23Nm of torque. This is similar to the output of most of its competition and if we are to go by the success of the R15, then bike will be a good performer. Expect ABS to be offered as an optional extra also.

We expect that through a combination sharing components with the R15 as well as local assembly, Yamaha should be able to keep the price of the R250 somewhere between Rs 1.5 to Rs two lakh.
