Yamaha unveils new automatic gearbox!

- Gets a switchgear-operated system

- Comprises a manual shift as well as two fully automatic modes

- Likely to be implied on multiple models

Yamaha has unveiled a new piece of technology for its arsenal in the form of an Automated Manual Gearbox. The Japanese bikemaker says its new AMT setup is aimed at improving sporty riding and will be used for some of its upcoming models.

The new Y-AMT setup is said to weigh just 2.8kg. It will be operated via the switch cubes on the handlebar. The left side cube has the see-saw shift levers to switch gears manually using the thumb and the index fingers. Meanwhile, the right unit has a dedicated mode switch to toggle between D+ and D. Yamaha says the D+ mode offers a sporty riding experience and allows you rev to a higher range before shifting while the D mode gets softer shifts, which is better suited for city riding.

The overall outcome here is the convenience of not using your foot to shift gear using the lever. Further, even in the AT mode, rider can use the see-saw lever if they feel the need to change the gear manually.

That said, motorcycles getting an AMT gearbox isn’t a new technology. Honda has been using a DCT for its flagship ADV, the Africa Twin, for years now. Even KTM is foraying into the same with its recent teaser videos of an AMT setup mounted on one of its upcoming Super Adventure models. Further, BMW too is developing an automatic transmission for its recently launched R 1300 GS.

It won’t be a surprise if even more two-wheeler manufacturers delve into the AMT technology in the future as there seems to be enough data around it for the required research and development.
