- Yamaha working on power steering
- Running a prototype on motocross bikes
Yamaha is working on a new technology that can take things to a whole new level. The company is working on power steering for motorcycles.
Till now, this tech has been regularly used in cars, but the Japanese brand wants to use it on two-wheelers. According to the company, a prototype of an electric power steering system will be used on motocross bikes this year. These bikes will participate in the All-Japan Motocross Championship.
This EPS system works through three processes. Firstly, there's a magnetostrictive torque sensor that measures the movement of the steering and the amount of force being applied by the rider. The information generated here is then sent to a control board. That board, in turn, tells an electronic actuator that is bolted to the front of the headstock and geared to the steering stem, how much assistance to add.
One of the ideas behind this tech is to reduce the overall fatigue that usually comes with motorcycling. The EPS system is bound to help lots of riders just like the steering dampers. But we can expect this tech to come only after 5-6 years of continuous development. And when
