Honda CB650R Summary

Honda launched the CB650R mid-size naked bike for the first time in India in March 2021. Now, it accompanies the CBR650R fully-faired offering that has been available in India for a long time, but it had an ‘F’ in its name until around Jan 2019. Both bikes are based on the same platform but there are certain differences depending on their purpose.

Similar to the CB300R and the CB1000R, the 650cc iteration too boasts Honda’s ‘Neo Sports Café’ styling. It is a combination of retro and modern design elements with a circular headlamp, sculpted fuel tank, a tiny tank extension, and a stubby tail. Complementing its distinctive styling are modern features like full-LED lighting, fully-digital console, and Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) that is essentially the traction control system with switchable functionality. It also gets ESS (Emergency Stop Signal) that activates the front and rear hazard lights in an event of sudden braking.

Powering the CB650R is a 649cc, inline four-cylinder, 16-valve, DOHC engine that produces 84.6bhp of power at 12,000rpm and 57.5Nm of peak torque at 8,500rpm. Its six-speed gearbox is accompanied by an assist and slipper clutch. As for the cycle parts, the suspension setup comprises Showa upside-down forks and a monoshock, while stopping power comes from dual radially-mounted four-piston brake callipers with floating dual discs up front and a single disc at the rear.

The Honda CB650R is available as a CKD (completely knocked down) product and can be had in one of the two available paint schemes - Candy Chromosphere Red and Matte Gunpowder Black Metallic. In the middle-weight naked bike genre, it competes against the Kawasaki Z650 and the Triumph Trident 660.

It's my daily ride, I own the Candy Red version. It has brought me nothing but joy, every single day since I got it. It's restrained aggression with this beauty. The heat management on this bike is phenomenal. Even in horrible traffic, it doesn't heat up like other 650s. The inline-four sounds like a bee nest at rest and a deep grunt post 5k RPM. Since the low-end torque isn't that high downshifts, sometimes to the first gear also may be unavoidable in city traffic. But on the highway post 4500 RPM, it's a rocket, that can give the litre-class giants a run for their money. I also have a Diavel that I have practically ignored after getting this since it does office runs as effortlessly as weekend breakfast rides. Got the extended warranty for peace of mind, not that this bike needs it, it's a Honda.
Pros: Smooth, agile, nimble, BEAST MODE post 4500rpm
Cons : Stock Dunlops, brakes not confident.

      Tips for other riders

Regular oil change, every 5-6k kms. Regular chain clean and lube. The brakes will take a while to get used to. They're not too sharp. And if you have the budget get the stock tyres changed immediately to something more grippy like pirelli.
