The new Yamaha FZ-X in one variant that is available in three colours – Matte Copper, Matte Black, and a new Navy Blue colour with golden wheels.

The styling cues include a round headlight at the front, a tall-set handlebar, an engine cowl, a step-up seat with a tuck and roll pattern for the cover, and a basic grab rail at the back. Yamaha FZ X Review

  • Good Things

    • Overall styling is fresh and pleasing
    • Good city riding comfort
    • Engine is refined and delivers good power
  • Could be Better

    • Switchgear quality is poor
    • Chassis welds aren't great to look at

BikeWale's Take

The FZX is a great bike for someone who wants a Yamaha but doesnt want to spend on the FZ S. The FZ X is a comfortable city bike that offers decent road presence and performance that is more than enough for the city use. Plus, it gets a decent number of features, especially the Bluetooth-enabled instrument cluster. However, the overall quality of certain cycle parts is a little disappointing.

Yamaha FZ X Expert Opinion

Now, the Yamaha FZ-X has received a model year update and we spent some time with it to tell you what’s different and if those changes have added any value to the motorcycle.

Introduction

Yamaha FZ X Right Side View

Why buy it?

- Comfortable ergonomics

- Tractable engine

- Retro-esque appeal

Why avoid it?

- Could get peppier performance

- Slightly stiff suspension setup

The introduction of the XSR155 in international markets created quite a stir here in India- at least that is what it seemed on the internet. Its modern-retro styling, the R15’s tried-and-tested engine and a rugged appeal made it enticing as ever. However, what we got was the FZ-X- a motorcycle tailor-made for India.

While the move was disappointing to many, after having ridden the FZ-X as our long-term, the motorcycle in itself was anything but. Now, the Yamaha FZ-X has received a model year update and we spent some time with it to tell you what’s different and if those changes have added any value to the motorcycle.

The Visuals

Yamaha FZ X Left Side View

Not much has changed on the 2023 Yamaha FZ-X when it comes to design. The styling is drawn from the XSR155 and the similarities are evident in its rugged character. You have the fork gaiters, and dual-purpose tyres, the ribbed pattern seat and a boxy fuel tank.

Yamaha FZ X Front View

But for 2023, Yamaha has added a new navy blue colour to the FZ-X which makes it look even closer in styling to the XSR range. In combination with the blue are the golden wheels which give the bike a somewhat premium appeal. As for build quality, there's not much to nit-pick here. While the fitment of components and switchgear look sturdy, Yamaha could have made it look more premium than before.

The Package

Yamaha FZ X Left Side View

The previous FZX had a decent list of features that put it on par with its rivals. However, for the 2023 model, Yamaha has upped its game by adding a couple of new features to the package. So, you now get LED turn indicators with a smoked cover. These complement the bike's LED DRL and LED projector headlamp.

Yamaha FZ X Right Side View

But the most interesting bit on the 2023 Yamaha FZ-X is the traction control system. This is a feature unheard of in this segment and it is the same system that the R14 V4 and new FZ-S are kitted with. The system works by sporadically cutting off power under 3000rpm to prevent tyre slip under hard acceleration. It works well and would especially be a boon for newer riders. Other than this, the FZ-X comes with a single-channel ABS and an LCD screen which displays vital info like rpm, tachometer, two trip meters and a clock.

The Ride

Yamaha FZ X Left Side View

Just like most other aspects, no changes have been made to the FZX’s engine. It continues with a 149cc, single-cylinder engine that is tuned for everyday commuting and fuel efficiency.

This 12.2bhp and 13.3Nm producing engine feels refined for the most part. And while this motor feels smooth around 60-70kmph and offers decent mid-range performance upto 6000rpm, it feels stressed post this mark and begins to buzz with vibrations on the pegs and handlebar.

Yamaha FZ X Left Side View

That said, we only managed to hit 105kmph, which for a 150cc motorcycle seems like it is underperforming. In addition to this, the FZ-X does not always offer enough grunt for quick overtakes. It needs some coaxing and a downshift to surge ahead.

But in our short stint with the motorcycle, I was impressed by the level of comfort it offered. Not only is the seat wide and accommodating, it is well-cushioned as well.

Yamaha FZ X Left Side View

You will sit upright with the slightly pulled-back handlebar in front of you and the footpegs right underneath. The wide fuel tank offers great thigh support too. Even the suspension setup felt quite pliant over the numerous broken roads we encountered. Overall, the ride experience is comfortable and stress-free.

Should You Buy It?

Yamaha FZ X Rear View

So, the FZX is essentially the same as before. Though, with slight value added to its package with the LED indicators and traction control system. These have resulted in a hike of Rs 1000, so the motorcycle now costs Rs 1.37 lakh, ex-showroom. This makes it more premium than the FZ-S which also got similar updates for 2023.

Yamaha FZ X Right Side View

Does it make sense then? Well, if you are looking for a comfortable commuter with looks like a standout from the crowd of options, the FZ-X is a decent motorcycle to buy. Or else, you could look back at the FZ-S or even the FZ25 that costs Rs 13,000 more and comes with better touring abilities and comfort as well. That said, the FZ-X does have a few shortcomings, but these are minor enough to be overlooked for the positives the motorcycle has to offer.

MY FIRST OWNED BIKE: FZX 150

      Hadees Siddique

I pre-booked this in 2021, amazed with its look-lite weight machine with a 150cc engine at an affordable price was a sleek move for me but that move is totally worth it.
I have driven more than 11K kms and still feel this bike can give more power and long rides one of my longest rides on this bike was 70 to 80Kms, its braking system is great, while the grip bike's tires give on the road is phenomenal, in this two years my bike never slipped never left its grip and I think that's what makes it great. 10 liters tank every day I make a commute of almost 20 to 22kms, and I fill up the full tank and that easily goes for a whole month. Its speed, comfort, and control are commendable. I had 3-4 accidents but this bike has saved me every time it's leg guard and well builds body. Whenever or where ever I go with this bike, FZX is an attention seeker even after 2 years still people stop me and ask me about the bike they get so impressed with the looks and color combination( I have the orange and black in Matte) no doubt it's definitely a piece of art.
Talking about service and maintenance it varies from rider to rider (if you ride it like a bike it will be very cost-effective), I only did normal servicing, and it's affordable and cost-effective. I have kept my bike in a great condition that nobody can tell it's a 2-year-old bike. So it usually depends on how you use it.
      Pros;-
      -Mileage
      -Fuel efficient
      -Comfort
      -Braking system
      -Build Quality
      -Cost-effective
      -Exhaust Note
      -Easy to handle
there aren't many cons, but there are some points I would like to add
      Cons;-
-Bluetooth connectivity (It drained my battery whenever I kept my idle for 3-4 days)
-After each 80 Km/h speed because of its lite weight bike does vibrates and it feels it's taking too much power
      Overall;-
If you're looking for a bike that is affordable, retro, cafe racer with a 150cc engine, cost-effective, and fuel-efficient you can get this bike.

      Pramod

I think through this bike yamaha wanted to set a classic example for "what is a terrible design?" and by looking at this bike i am pretty sure that they have won over a huge margin. It is not comfortable, looks dated and for this bike yamaha betrayed indians heart and launched fz-x over xsr. If somebody from yamaha reading this, just fire the person who suggested fz-x over xsr and the person who designed fz-x. They deserve it.

I am telling him not to buy this but he is not understanding he wants to buy this, if you are going to buy this bike then i would suggest you not to buy this instead you can buy apache 160r 4v bs6 which is much better than Yamaha Fz x 150.

I must say, it's delightful to hear that your buying journey was hassle-free, and the delivery within 15 days of purchase certainly adds to the convenience.
Your dedication to using the bike for your daily commute to the office is commendable. While it's understandable that you've noted some limitations in terms of top-end performance, it's great that you've highlighted the practical aspect of the bike's utility for daily commuting.
The aesthetics of the bike seem to have left a lasting impression on you, and it's understandable given the emphasis on looks and style in today's market. It's unfortunate that Yamaha hasn't launched the XSR in India yet, but perhaps there will be developments in the future.
In terms of its positives, the mileage, looks, and comfort stand out as key advantages, enhancing the overall experience of ownership. However, it's important to address the areas that could be improved, such as performance, console, and switch gear quality, to ensure a more satisfying riding experience for enthusiasts like yourself.
      Pros - Millage, looks, comfort
Cons- Performance, Console, and switch gear quality.

You may go on a long ride on FZ-X, but As FZ-X doesn't feature a big engine so there can be an issue. Most of all I like the braking, handling, and ride comfort of this bike. Below 60 kph, it has good pickup when switching from one gear to another which also gives a good kick to the rider. Overall I would say there are other bikes around 50k cheaper than this which would probably give you the same levels of performance.
